Film – the itch I can never scratch

Graduating film school in 1998 with a degree in Film, Video and Photography I hoped that, by now, I would be a successful film director working in Hollywood.

This has not happened, and has left me with an itch I keep trying to scratch. The itch gets worse when I see that some of my fellow alumni are making films, working on TV shows and even winning BAFTAs (yes, seriously).

Still, I’m not bitter.

A quick rant

To keep up with the film references though, my Sliding Doors moment came before film school, as far back as 1995, when myself and a friend travelled to London to be in the audience for the taping of an episode of Beadle’s Hotshots. Similar to Beadle’s About and You’ve Been Framed, Hotshots was a TV show where people would send in spoofs they had scripted and filmed to be screened on the TV. Our submissions hadn’t quite made the cut but, as we’d shown promise, we were invited down to a taping of a show.

The editor I had been in contact with for weeks recognised me at the door, and asked me to meet him afterwards to discuss ideas for the second series. As with all TV shows, it took hours to film and we were in danger of missing our train, so we stood him up and went home. As I was off to film school, and subsequent success, I never got back in touch and never sent in anything for the second series.

It was years later, when watching the TV show Spaced, I recognised the name of the director… Edgar Wright. He was the guy I stood up. The guy who recognised ME. He, of course, went on to direct films such as Scott Pilgrim versus the World, Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and Baby Driver. If I could go back and change one thing in my past, that would be it.

Film School

Film making is actually the one thing I’m qualified to do, having a degree in Film and Video from Newport Film School. My final year film can be watched here – but it is from 1998, so don’t judge it too harshly. The film was shot at the famous TJ’s Nightclub, in Newport, and features one of the actors from the clubland movie Human Traffic, which was being filmed at the same time.
